The United Fruit Company was formed in 1899 when the Boston Fruit Company merged with several other companies that produced, imported, and marketed bananas from the Caribbean islands, Central America, and Colombia. The principal founder was Minor C. Keith, who developed banana plantations in Costa Rica beginning in the 1870s. During the early decades of the twentieth century, United Fruits distribution networks spread throughout the United States and Europe. By 1930, the company had absorbed more than twenty rival firms and was the largest employer in Central America.

From its founding, the United Fruit Company acquired large, undeveloped tracts of land made available to it by Caribbean and Central and South American governments. The company cleared and planted these lands and developed extensive railroad and port facilities. It also built employee housing, schools for the children of employees, hospitals, and research laboratories. United Fruits laboratories worked to develop disease-resistant crops, insecticides, and fungicides. The company operated a large fleet of steamships painted white to protect their cargo from the tropical sun. This Great White Fleet transported United Fruits products to the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The United Fruit Company ultimately owned or leased property in Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, Colombia, Cuba, Jamaica, and numerous other Central American, South American, and the West Indian countries. It engaged in the production, transportation, and marketing of bananas, sugar, cocoa, abaca, and other tropical products.

In 1970, the United Fruit Company merged with AMK Corporation; the new corporation was called the United Brands Company. The company became Chiquita Brands International in 1990.

The collection is arranged in the following series:

Series I. Mexico and Central America, 1891-1957

Series II. South America, 1922-1957

Series IV. British Cameroons and Elders & Fyffes, 1913-1951

Series V. United States, ca. 1910-1957

Series VII. Spraying and Irrigation, 1935-1957

Series IX. Recreation & Miscellaneous, 1916-1927

The collection consists of seventy-five photograph albums that document the United Fruit Companys operations in Central and South America, the West Indies, and the United States. The photographs were taken between 1891 and 1962, with the majority dating from the 1920s through the 1950s. The albums contain approximately 10,400 photographs that vary in size from 3 x 5 inches to 9 x 11 inches. Most of the photographs are accompanied by brief captions that describe their content.

The photographs depict agricultural operations, construction, and research activities undertaken by the companys many operating units. These units produced bananas, sugar, abaca (for use as hemp), cacao, palm oil, cattle, and mahogany. The operational activities illustrated include planting, spraying, irrigation, and harvesting. Photographs also depict the construction and running of railroads, the building of wharves, company towns, schools, hospitals, and recreational facilities. The photographs also include images of the damage cause to company properties by hurricanes, floods, windstorms, fires, and other natural disasters.

Apple Golden

The favorite fruit of all children and adults is an apple. The most unpretentious tree, which with proper care yields a good harvest. The homeland of this useful fruit is Central Asia. According to reliable scientists, the first apples on Earth originated in the mountains of Kazakhstan at an altitude of more than two thousand meters. A little earlier it was believed that apples are hybrids of other fruits. But how did the ancestors of the modern fetus exist and in our time only in very small numbers. The most common variety is the apple tree. Although at present there are many varieties of wood that grow in different climatic zones.

Speaking about the beneficial properties of an apple, it is first of all worth noting a low calorie content. The fruit has such useful qualities:

• Normalization of the gastrointestinal tract;

• Excretion of oxalic acid from the body, due to the high content of chlorogenic acid;

• Decreased cholesterol in the blood, due to the presence of pectin and fibers in the composition;

• Improving appetite, with the help of little-known vitamin G (vitamin of appetite);

• Treatment of vitamin deficiency and anemia, because the apple contains a large content of iron and other useful elements.

Fruit Juice Company Stock Flies on Bitcoin Rumour

Everyone and their dog seem to be trying to cash in on cryptocurrency at the moment. Perhaps the clearest indication of this is the rapid increase in stock price a once-fruit juice company who have undergone something of a re-brand experienced today. SkyPeople Fruit Juice changed name to Future FinTech (FTFT) back in June. The company havent mentioned the terms blockchain, Bitcoin, or cryptocurrency in any of their literature since but financial research groupFactSethave reported that their market value shot up to a massive $12.5 million on Tuesday. At the close of trading, the price per stock was up an impressive 64 percent and valued at around $3 a share.

Whilst the company have said that they would focus on financial technology rather than pulping pineapples, there was no indication whatsoever that this would mean theyd be working on blockchain solutions and cryptocurrency projects. Thedocumentsthey published last month mention that theyd be moving towards trading commodities and facilitating e-commerce platforms. Interestingly, they still carry images of fresh fruit all over their November company presentation making the name change seem bizarre at best.

According to the document Future FinTechs goals include:

Youd expect a company consciously trying to cash in on Bitcoin-mania would have included at least one other buzzword to excite potential investors but the lack of peer-to-peer, decentralisation, distributed ledgers, or smart contracts suggests that the name change might not have been a publicity stunt.

Whether or not Future FinTech intended such a response on the market remains unclear. However, at one point during Tuesday, the price per share in the tiny former fruit juicers was up a whopping 200 percent on the day. The trading volume of course tells a similar tale. Today, over 28 times more shares were exchanged in comparison with the 30 day average. According toCNBC, David Rudnick, the investor relations representative at Future FinTech, was not available for comment.

Cuyamel Fruit Company

, formerly the Hubbard-Zemurray Steam Ship Company, was anAmericanagricultural corporation operating inHondurasfrom 1911 until 1929, before being purchased by theUnited Fruit Company.Samuel Zemurray, aimmigrant to theUnited States, founded Cuyamel to exportbananasandsugarfrom the northwesternCortsregion of Honduras to international markets. Zemurray would later become the head of the United Fruit Company. Both Cuyamel and United Fruit are corporate ancestors of the modern-day firmChiquita Brands International.

Zemurray started selling bananas inMobile, Alabamaas a teenager before moving toNew Orleans, Louisiana. After earning enough profit selling bananas in New Orleans, Zemurray helped start a steamship line to import bananas from the tropics to sell in the United States. This firm was known as the Hubbard-Zemurray Steam Ship Company. Zemurray was able to expand his company by reducing banana spoilage in transit. Though information on this early incarnation of the company is scarce, records show that the Hubbard-Zemurray group was involved in at least one case before the Supreme Court of the United States.[2]

After his achievements in New Orleans, Zemurray headed to Honduras to expand his company into banana production. Honduras, a Central American country close to theEquator, is well-suited for growing bananas. With its new operations in Honduras, Hubbard-Zemurray would eventually become Cuyamel.

Zemurray and his firm were not without competition. The main player angling for control of the Honduras banana market besides Cuyamel Fruit was a firm called Vaccaro Brothers and Company. The organization was started by three American brothers ofSicilianheritage- Joseph, Felix, and Lucca Vaccaro- and their brother-in-law. Vaccaro would become theStandard Fruit Company, which in turn would later be purchased by the company now known asDole Foods.[3]

Both the Vaccaro firm and Cuyamel were relatively minor players in the banana export market, both dwarfed by the United Fruit Company of Boston. Before United Fruit entered Honduras as a direct producer in 1910, the firm participated in the Honduras market by proxy through investments in both Zemurrays and Vaccaro Brothers companies. Before United developed plantations of its own in the cities of Trujillo and Tela, it owned 60% of Cuyamel and 50% of Vaccaro. Even though the three companies were competitive, they maintained a cartel-like cooperation, with joint efforts in advertising and increasing banana agricultural outputs in Honduras.[4]

Regardless of this cooperation, it was the nature of the three companies competition that led to political discord in Central American states in the early 20th century. Zemurray had played an active role in Honduran politics since he first arrived in the country. In 1910, the administration of PresidentMiguel R. Dvilagranted the Vaccaro Brothers Company land for railroad construction and prohibited competitors from building a competing railroad within 20 kilometers of the Vaccaro line. Zemurray was no fan of the Dvila administration, having provided encouragement and financial aid in a failed 1908 coup attempt against Dvila.[5][6]

Dvilas concessions to Vaccaro pushed Zemurray over the edge. He found his opportunity in former PresidentManuel Bonilla. Zemurray supplied weapons and transportation for Bonilla to launch acoupagainst Dvila. President Dvila fled, and Bonilla once again assumed the presidency of the nation, owing in large part to the direct intervention of Zemurray.

Shortly before Bonilla ascended to the presidency, Zemurray in 1911 transformed his company from Hubbard-Zemurray into Cuyamel Fruit Company. He acquired 5,000 acres of land for agriculture along the Cuyamel River in the northwestern extremity of Honduras, near the Guatemalan border. The firm took its new name either from this river or from the town of Cuyamel nearby. As a repayment for his support, Bonilla also granted Zemurray a concession to build a railroad between the town of Cuyamel, by the coast, and Veracruz, in the interior [6]. The companys main Honduras office was in the coastal city ofPuerto Corts.[7]

The 1908 failed coup and the Bonilla coup would mark a tradition in Honduras and other Central American states of banana companies intervening in government affairs. This practice would last up until the 1970s. The most famous of these interventions is probably the CIA-backed Guatemalan Coup of 1954. However, unlike other countries surrounding it, Honduras was unable to urbanize or diversify its economy beyond the banana industry. The country became the paragon banana republic with an economy dominated by oligarchic banana plantations serving as a playground for foreign-owned companies.[8]

Historians classify the period between 1911 and 1920 as a time of relative stability for Cuyamel and Honduras.[9]There were no more coups in the country through the end of the decade, but Zemurrays Cuyamel Fruit was in fierce competition with Vaccaro and United. Whats more, Cuyamels development of a previously empty strip of land along theGuatemala-Honduras border almost led to an outbreak of war between the two states, but this was halted by United States mediation.[10]This incident of near-war strained relations between pro-Honduras Cuyamel and pro-Guatemala United, and this tension would not fully cool off until the two companies became one in 1929.[11]Despite its challenges, Cuyamel was able to expand into a near-sovereign entity. The American Embassy in Honduras went as far as saying, in 1916, that the territory controlled by the Cuyamel Fruit Company is a state itself, within another stateit houses its employees, cultivates plantations, operates railroads, stations, steamship lines, potable water systems, power plants, commissaries, [and] clubs. By the 1920s, the land and the railroad grant that Zemurray started with in Honduras had helped him to emerge as even more of an industrial titan than he already was, and thanks to both a friendly relationship with the government of Honduras and strong sales, the company was able to expand its holdings.

Records indicate that the company was incorporated inDelaware, but its board of directors met in New Orleans, Zemurrays adopted city. The firm organized operations under several subsidiaries. The Cuyamel subsidiary known as the Corts Company was the firms manager of Honduran operations. Other Central American subsidiaries under Cuyamels control included the Bluefields Company in Nicaragua, the Transport Company to run the corporate freight rail and steam lines, and the Sula Sugar Company to manage the companys sugarcane interests.

Figures from 1924 peg the combined assets of these affiliates at $3.97 billion in modern inflation-adjusted figures.[12]The stock of Cuyamel fell by 20 points that same year.[13]In 1925 the firm issued $5 million in bonds backed by such prestigious firms asLehman BrothersandGoldman Sachsto finance the companys purchase of land along the Ula River in western Honduras.[14]Sales data from 1927 shows that Cuyamel accounted for about 14% of the bananas imported and sold in the United States that year.[15]

In 1929, after theOctober crashof international financial markets, Zemurray sold Cuyamel to United Fruit in exchange for stock and retired.Black Tuesdaysent Cuyamel shares into a tailspin, forcing the combination of the two companies (Vaccaro, known by 1929 as the Standard Fruit Company, remained independent). For his sale of the Cuyamel Fruit Company, Zemurray received 300,000 shares of United Fruit, with a market valuation of $31 million, which would be about $420 million today. With the sale, United Fruit secured its domination of the United States banana market for the better part of the 20th century.[16]

Zemurray received a seat on the board of directors of United Fruit after he sold his company, but mismanagement in the face of hard economic times sent the business valuation falling. Zemurray bought up discounted equity in the company until he could take it over as a majorityshareholder. With control of the firm, Z
emurray came out of retirement and named himselfCEOof his once formidable competitor in 1933. He reorganized operations and restored United Fruits profits and value. Zemurray was CEO until his retirement in 1954.[17]

At the end of his tenure, United Fruit was able to motivate the U.S. federal government to back a coup against Guatemalan PresidentJacobo Arbenz. This coup led to years of civil war and unrest and is perhaps the most famous incident in United Fruits history.

Zemurray used the proceeds and the influence afforded to him by his ownership of Cuyamel and later United to support a number of philanthropic causes. He was a supporter of left- wing political movements in the United States such asFranklin RooseveltsNew Deal. He also supported the left-leaning magazineThe Nation. A Jewish businessman fromEastern Europe, he contributed to Jewish nationalist groups. His home is today the residence of the president ofTulane Universityin New Orleans.[18]
